Scranton Stories: Oral History Project

Scranton Stories is part of a community-wide project of The University of Scranton, Scranton's Story, Our Nation's Story, a multi-year exploration of themes of community, history, belonging, identity, and democracy. The 25 Scranton Stories videos are excerpted from the full oral history interviews of 33 individuals who have either lived or worked in Scranton, PA. Each give voice to a broad array of Scranton experiences that connect this city's story to our nation’s ongoing story, in anticipation of the 250th anniversary of the United States of America.

The Scranton Stories oral history initiative is a project of The University of Scranton and these community partners: Black Scranton Project, Lackawanna County Arts & Culture Department, Lackawanna Historical Society, Lackawanna County Immigrant Inclusion Committee, Neighborworks Northeastern Pennsylvania, and the Scranton Public Library. The Spirit of Lenapehoking In Nay Aug Park

Curtis Zunigha of Lenape Center
Reconnecting to the Culture & Horticulture of the Lenape Homeland is the focus of this educational initiative focused in Nay Aug Park in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The project seeks to educate local residents about the culture of Lenape people in this region - and take real steps toward welcoming Lenape descendants back here to their ancestral homelands by inviting them to participate in planning future civic and cultural projects.

PROJECT PARTNERS & FUNDERS:
Founded by The Greenhouse Project, University of Scranton, and Lenape Center, the project was initially funded by The Lackawanna Heritage Valley with the intention of creating an Indigenous Teaching Garden in Nay Aug Park. Realizing that more community education and partnerships were needed for a community teaching garden to succeed and thrive, the project shifted toward those goals. Additional partners continue to come on board, most recently Marywood University, The Sisters of IHM, and the Lackawanna Co. Arts & Culture Department.

Craig Czury International Poetry Project
Dates: 2016 - Present
Roles: Project Manager, Cover Design, Editor
Poet, Educator, and Fulbright Professor Craig Czury's events bring the world a little closer together via international poetry events and classes that are held both online and in person, to participation in literature events around the world, to the publication of over 20 collections of poetry, many of which are in translation around the globe.

Since 1984, Craig has been a featured poet in the schools and in community centers, creating public poetry in the most unlikely places. His experience is irreplaceable and his artistic voice is growing deeper and more urgent in today's climate.

The Greenhouse Project: Programs & Events

Connecting and Growing Healthier Communities is the focus of this organization. Their mission is accomplished by educating children and adults about horticulture, holistic health and disease prevention through diet and active lifestyle, and supporting locally-grown food and responsible food policy. Growing a more connected community and teaching self resilience is at the heart of everything this organization does - while giving opportunities for people to find meaning in volunteering and in meeting others.
​
Roles here include (among many other things) program concept, design, and implementation; grant writing and management; program coordination; website and multi-media design; staff & volunteer training; event management; community liaison; and PR & social media campaigns.
